Navigate the Newsgroups:
Step Six: Surf22 Internet Marketing Program
Newsgroups is a generic term we use to cover newsgroups, message boards,
bulletin boards, chat rooms, etc... There are only two main true Usenet newsgroups you
need to worry about and remarq.com draws some of its posting from the biggest of
them all Deja.com (now owned by Google). It isn't just about the newsgroups however, it is about chat
rooms, message/bulletin boards anywhere people gather to discuss anything that
might relate to their business.
Newsgroups are usually places where people can "post" messages.
"Replies" can then be posted which can lead to a
"discussion". These are all terms you will see scattered through the
newsgroups.
Start your navigating at the following link Google Usenet Newsgroups.
What you will find is a search box where you can use your keywords to search
a variety of messages on every topic. Look for inquiries relating to your field.
You can subscribe and post message. You'll also find people often have their
e-mail addresses on the messages. This is a chance to contact people one on one.
This is the step where you have to tread most carefully, if you are hesitant
try out the Google Groups link, search for related material but don't start posting ad
material everywhere. Some of these techniques take time to learn and they don't
apply to all businesses.
There are so many message boards and chat rooms on the internet you can
certainly find one that relates to your industry. Use some of the Guidelines and Examples
we offer. Your ISP or e-mail program should be able to connect with local
newsgroups. Netscape and Outlook both have newsgroups capability built in. In
this format the messages look much like e-mail, read many of the messages before
starting, this will give you a feel for the group and allow you to make sure you
are in the right place.
Newsgroups are generally about exchanging information. Avoid blatant sales
pitches, you'll get ignored by passive newsgroups and flamed (angry e-mails)
from some of the more aggressive ones. Allow your signature files (remember Step
Four?) to do your promoting for you. Post informative messages.
Remember to proceed with caution. Don't spend too much time on this step, use
these guidelines to fill in the time when you don't feel like embarking on any
of the major steps. Find a few message boards or chat rooms you can bookmark and
drop in when you need a break and just want to do so simple work.
